Christa Durand
The Essence of Versatility
Christa Durand is a renowned lyric soprano who effortlessly weaves the beauty of clarity and warmth into every note she sings. With a repertoire that spans hundreds of concerts and shows, she has become an artistic cornerstone in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
A proud native of Santa Rosa, California, Christa's talents shine brightly, whether she's gracing the stage of a classical recital hall or captivating audiences in an intimate cabaret setting. Her versatility isn't just a trait; it's a testament to her love for the art.
Academic and Artistic Foundations
Her academic journey at Sonoma State University, fueled by the prestigious Everett B. Person Scholarship for Vocal Studies, was where Christa honed her classical prowess and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. It was here that her passion for contemporary works and composers blossomed. She collaborates tirelessly with composers, breathing life into their opera, folk, jazz, and new-age compositions.
A Mission Beyond Music
Christa's commitment extends beyond the stage. Through various outreach programs, she fervently works to underline the timeless relevance of classical music in today's world. As a member of Opera on Tap, San Francisco, Christa takes opera out of its traditional confines and into eclectic venues. Simultaneously, as the Artist Director of The Artists' Salon, she's reviving the classic salon format, nurturing profound discussions around art and music.
Advocacy and Enrichment
A staunch advocate for music education and access, Christa co-founded Up Street Music Patrons, a non-profit championing musical opportunities for all. Whether it's offering scholarships, subsidizing tuitions, or bringing professional performances into schools and communities, the organization is a testament to Christa's dedication.
Christa Durand's unwavering passion for musical theatre and opera becomes evident in the many productions she orchestrates each year. Not only does she play the pivotal role of a producer, meticulously planning and overseeing the intricate aspects of each show, but she also occasionally steps into the director's chair, guiding performers to bring stories to life on stage with authenticity and emotion. At the heart of these productions is the Music to My Ears initiative. Under this program, Christa champions personal development, ensuring that each participant grows in their artistry and skill set. A distinctive feature of her approach is the nurturing environment she creates, which encourages even those who have never set foot on a stage before, allowing novice performers to step into the spotlight with confidence.
In 2019, marking a landmark moment in her artistic journey, Christa and her husband, Evan Bowers, took ownership of Music to My Ears in Cotati. With this acquisition, they had a clear vision: to transform it into a nurturing sanctuary where students, irrespective of their age or proficiency, can immerse themselves in the world of music and theater arts, honing their talents and realizing their potential.
